CANDIS BREAKFAST CLUB HILL MEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL RECEIVED: £2,000

PAID FOR: Breakfast Club
NOMINATED BY: Carmel McConnell

“One of the simplest ways to make an immediate and dramatic difference to what children can achieve is to give them a good nutritious breakfast,” says Magic Breakfast founder Carmel McConnell. She chose Hill Mead Primary School in Brixton to receive this first Breakfast Club award for many reasons. A dedicated teaching staff, a clear commitment to healthy eating at lunch and an abundance of clubs and educational schemes that benefit the whole community.
“This award means we can extend our breakfast club to 50 more pupils for a year,” says Cheryl Stonebridge, Deputy Head (above).

The finishing touch HAWTHORNE PARK TRUST, CLEVELEYS RECEIVED: £4,150

PAID FOR: Ollerton Festival seats
NOMINATED BY: Jenifer Phillips

“Being able to sit in a park and take time out is something a lot of people take for granted, but for us it’s a delightful novelty,” says Candis member Jenifer Phillips. “Over the past four years Hawthorne Park Trust has worked hard to transform a barren field
into a beauty spot to be enjoyed by all. We fundraised tirelessly and recruited the help of over 60 volunteers to create the park, which includes a play area and a wildlife area. The only thing that was missing was some seating but we had run low on funds and didn’t think we could raise enough in time, but thanks to Candis, we now have three benches. Due to the large amount of new residential development in this area open space has become a rarity; the park has filled this gap and the whole community now has a place to meet and hold special events such as sports and gala days.”

Access for all GIRLGUIDING WILTSHIRE NORTH, WILTSHIRE RECIEVED: £5,000

PAID FOR: Disabled toilet and shower unit
NOMINATED BY:
 Jane McNeill

“Having increased disabled facilities has made a huge difference to Girlguiding Wiltshire North,” says Candis member Jane McNeill. “We recently acquired a new building after
many years of fundraising, but it didn’t have a disabled loo
or shower. As a result, some of our members and adult volunteers were unable to enjoy it. We currently have three disabled leaders including one, who runs both a Brownie and Girl Guide group, so the lack of facilities wasn’t just affecting those who are registered disabled. Now every single one of our 3,800 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides will benefit from these extra amenities, as will many more community groups who would have previously been prevented from using the centre because of access issues, such as the Out and About learn group, which is made up of children who are home tutored and have recently started using the centre weekly.”
