Henry Winkler’s role as The Fonz in Happy Days made him one of the world’s most famous actors. Since it ended in 1984, he’s been in Scream and The Waterboy, and is an award-winning producer and director of TV programmes like Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Clueless. In 2003, he began writing the Hank Zipzer series of children’s novels (Walker Books, £4.99).
Q Do you mind that you are always associated with The Fonz?
Never! No one will ever let me forget I played him but, if I’m going to be remembered for something, it may as well be for one of the best-loved characters to ever grace a TV show. We did 255 episodes over ten years, so it’s no wonder people still remember it.
Do you still see the cast?
Yes, we have reunions every so often. I see Marion Ross quite a bit – she played Mrs Cunningham. And I see Ron Howard a lot too. He played Richie but is now the world famous director we all know and love. He’s like my kid brother. My wife, Stacey, and I always go around to his for things like Thanksgiving.
